Oud: The Most Precious Wood in Perfumery

Some materials do more than perfume.
They command presence.

Oud belongs to this rare category. Born in the heart of the aquilaria tree, when the wood defends itself and transforms, this resinous material develops a dark, dense and almost mystical scent. A precious substance long burned as incense in the Middle East, it has become one of the pillars of modern perfumery.

Oud does not reveal itself immediately.
It settles. It envelops.

It leaves behind a deep and lasting trace.

Where Does Oud Come From?

Oud oil is distilled from agarwood, a rare resinous wood formed in the heart of trees from the genus Aquilaria, native to Southeast Asia and Northern India.

In certain circumstances, when the tree is wounded or attacked by a natural fungus, it protects itself by producing a dark and intensely fragrant resin. Slowly, over time, this resin permeates the wood and transforms it into agarwood, the precious material from which oud is extracted.

This natural phenomenon is exceptionally rare: only one Aquilaria tree in a thousand develops this deep and aromatic resin.

Mainly sourced from several Southeast Asian countries, including Thailand, Laos, Myanmar, Vietnam and India, oud has been used for centuries across Asia and the Middle East, where it accompanies rituals, celebrations and olfactory traditions.

Even today, this rare material remains one of the most fascinating ingredients in perfumery.

Depth as a Signature

Woody, smoky, sometimes leathery, sometimes amber-like, oud possesses a singular olfactory texture. It is both animalic and refined, raw yet sophisticated.

Its olfactory profile is dark, rich and dense, defined by a remarkable woody depth.
Complex and warm, the material reveals smoky, leathery, balsamic and sometimes subtly fruity facets.

Depending on the species of Aquilaria, its geographical origin and the extraction methods used, oud may reveal nuances that are smokier, spicier or softer.

Within a fragrance composition, it acts like an invisible architecture.

It structures, deepens and gives the fragrance its backbone.

Used excessively, it dominates.
Handled with precision, it magnifies.

Oud According to Frédéric Malle

At Frédéric Malle, oud is never a mere effect.

It is a material entrusted to a perfumer, free to explore its complexity.

Each creation reveals a different facet of this rare wood.

Within the Desert Gems collection, Frédéric Malle explores oud through several creations: PROMISE, THE MOON, DAWN, THE NIGHT and HOPE , where each perfumer reveals a singular interpretation of this precious material:

• a nocturnal interpretation, deep and majestic
• a more luminous, almost spiritual variation
• compositions where oud converses with incense, amber or rose

Here, oud is never decorative.
It is conceived, measured and constructed.

The Perfumer’s Vision

DOMINIQUE ROPION evokes the singular power of this material: “Working with natural oud is never simple, because it is an extremely powerful material.

You must find the right balance so that it expresses its full opulence while still leaving space for other materials.”

For the perfumer, a great oud must reveal the full richness of the material:

“A beautiful oud must express the complexity of the material: its characteristic woody and animalic notes, but also nuances of leather, smoke, balsam and spice, sometimes accompanied by a subtle fruity touch.”

A Material of Exception

Why does oud fascinate so much?

Because it is rare.
Because it lingers on the skin with remarkable intensity.
Because it asserts presence.
An oud fragrance is never neutral.
It asserts character.

Pure oud oil counts among the rarest and most precious raw materials in perfumery, its value closely tied to its origin and purity.

Prized for millennia, oud is considered one of nature’s most extraordinary treasures.

Discover Oud Perfumes

Exploring oud means entering a dense, almost tactile olfactory territory.

It means choosing a fragrance that leaves an impression.

Editions de Parfums Frédéric Malle offers several interpretations of this rare material, where oud is respected, elevated and mastered, notably within the DESERT GEMS collection imagined by renowned perfumers.

PROMISE, created by Dominique Ropion, recreates the alluring power of oud through an olfactory illusion, supported by cypriol and two precious roses, Turkish and Bulgarian.

THE MOON, composed by Julien Rasquinet, blends rose, oud and incense in a warm and refined composition, illuminated by the unexpected brightness of blackberry and redcurrant.

DAWN, imagined by Carlos Benaïm, is an amber fragrance with oud where the material is illuminated by Turkish rose, amber woods and oakmoss, enriched with frankincense and pink pepper.

THE NIGHT, signed by Dominique Ropion, explores natural oud in a monumental composition enriched with saffron, Turkish rose, incense and sandalwood.

HOPE, also composed by Dominique Ropion, highlights an exceptional oud essence revealed by the smoky elegance of vetiver and incense, lifted by spicy accents of pink pepper, cypress and juniper.

Like any great perfumed material, oud evolves differently on every skin, revealing a unique signature.

Here, oud becomes a work of art.

Oud FAQ

Why is oud so expensive?

Its natural rarity and long extraction process explain its high value. Only one Aquilaria tree in a thousand produces the resin required to form agarwood.
